Resume of Speakers notes from 2009 Conference
48 members enjoyed the conference held on the 3RD Oct. 2009 at the Hilton Strathclyde Hotel.
The speakers this year were Professor Jim MacKillop Chairperson of Scottish Medical And Scientific Advisory Committee and Kirsty Dewar learning & development advisor, occupational therapy , Edinburgh council.
Professor MacKillop is Professor of Medicine at Glasgow University and has interests in acute and Nuclear medicine and also medical education
Professor MacKillop gave a very in depth talk on how the working party which was set up in 2008 contains representatives from various medical departments and they all meet every three months to collate the evidence gathered from different sources
There are more people with PPS than was originally thought (app. 5-10 thousand) and clinicians have no awareness of the issues concerned with PPS
Professor MacKillop himself contracted polio in the 1950’s and PPS in the 1980’s so he is well informed about all the needs associated with patients suffering from PPS
The working committee still have 2 meetings to hold, a report will then be collated and a final report will be submitted to the chief medical officer
Kirsty Dewar gave a talk on how most of the OT dept’s work.
They are concerned with the well being of patients at all age levels, helping to develop their abilities and maintain a balance of activity.
OT dept’s show people new way’s of doing things and they may provide equipment to suit a persons needs.
They sometimes carry out adaptations to peoples houses or places of work to let people carry on as normal as their situation will allow.
They will also sometimes assist with finance for home adaptations and give advice on community services available
Later in the afternoon two workshops were held giving members the opportunity to ask questions on the various subjects.
